What to Expect: The Scott Homes Building Process

Building a home is a process. Most people come to us with no experience in building a home, and that’s okay. Our team is here to walk you through the process and make sure you have a clear idea of the steps involved in building a custom home.

Building a custom home is much different than buying an existing home—or even a new spec or tract home. Many of the new-build homes offer several color selections for counters and flooring, maybe even several floor plans.

At Scott Homes, we do that and more… We’re a custom home builder. We start with your ideas and your land and build from there.

Let’s look at the process.

Step 1—Introductions and Q&A

You can send us an email or give us a call. This will get us going with a bit of dialogue to help us get to know what you are looking for and how we can help.

Chris with talk with you about your vision for your project, what you have in mind, the land, your budget and timing. Chris will also give you the initial tools to make the right decision for you and your unique situation.

Step 2—First Meeting

After your first call or email, we will arrange a first meeting. You’ll come to our office and sit down to review the building process with you.

We will talk with you about topics like time restraints, potential hurdles, your budget and expectations.

This is a no-pressure, no obligation meeting. Our goal is to figure out what you’re looking for and make sure Scott Homes is the best fit for you and for the job before moving any further. This is your dream home! We take this investment seriously. Your custom home will last a lifetime.

Step 3—Design Agreement

After the first meeting, we will create the design agreement. Once this is arranged, we move into the details. And in a custom home, there are a lot of details!

During the design phase, we will sit down with you and plan the perfect house to fit your budget. You will likely have a list of must-haves that you absolutely want in your home. That’s where we will start.

Some other details we cover include:

How green do you want your home?
What energy efficient upgrades will give you the greatest benefit and fit in your budget?
How many bedrooms and bathrooms do you want? Etc...

We could put in three bathrooms and four medium sized bedrooms into every house, but again, that isn’t everybody’s dream. We want the home built just for YOU and your needs! That’s the emphasis here, trusting us with your dream.

Step 4—Pricing Your Home

After deciding on the details, we can calculate the costs to build your home. This step is where we will adjust, research, bid and engineer to finalize the plans to meet your needs and budget for your dream home.

Because we never build two houses alike, this step is a bit different for every client. We will have to arrange permits, sewage plans etc. Your plan will be unique to you.

This process may take a while, but when it’s all over, your home will be completely and uniquely yours.

Step 5—Building

Once we have created your perfect vision of what your home will look like—the breakfast nook in the kitchen, the perfect amount of space, bedrooms and bathrooms, all the little details you want in your home—comes the fun part: BUILDING!

After the contract is signed, you will work with our experienced project manager. We will also work closely with you to help you as you make decisions about important details.

With the help of our team, you will pick everything from the type of flooring to what the sort of faucet will go in your bathroom sink. You get to choose what you want in your dream home. We are there by your side as you make your selections.

We have list and a wealth of ideas and options to help you along the way. It can be a bit scary at first, but our team is there by your side to answer questions and make it fun. We will help you select the best products to get you what you want while staying within your budget.

When the job is finally done, Chris will take you through a formal walk-through explaining every possible thing you will need to know about taking care of your new home, explaining how your new house works together with all its parts to make a truly amazing and efficient home.

It’s a long process building a custom home. Yes, we do offer basic plans that you can choose to build from, but again it will be customized for you—with consideration for both your budget and your vision of your dream home.
